All of us in this class had our own
personal reasons for why we wanted to attend USC. Perhaps it was because of the
school spirit that permeates the campus, even when there are barely any
students around. Maybe it was because of the huge emphasis that’s put on our
college football team (which is why yesterday’s loss was such a downer). I,
myself have various reasons as to why I wanted to come here, but one of the
biggest factors in my decision to deem this my dream school was because of LA
itself.
Even though I generally enjoyed my
time at UCSB last year, one of my biggest problems with my time there was that
the campus was isolated from the rest of Santa Barbara. One thing I love about
USC’s campus is that it is surrounded by the rest of the city. I actually like
that I have to constantly depend on going to the Village because it makes my
fewer trips to Figueroa much more meaningful. The architecture and city life in
that area evokes a unique sense of character, even if it’s nearby the less
fortunate area of LA. The fact that everything seems so close to each other
makes it feel like a smaller community within LA.
However, it doesn’t stop there. When
I think of an example of a standard city, Los Angeles is ideal. This extends
out to LA county in general, as many nearby cities such as Pasadena have a similar
vibe to LA. Because of this, LA county has so many areas that are different yet
somehow feel the same. I love this because going off-campus would let me make
new discoveries every week, and the expo line on the Metro only helps me reach
these areas. Going to Santa Monica one week and then hiking to the Hollywood
sign the week after makes my time here more diverse and expansive. Even though
we are all going to school here, I generally prefer if I only came here
sparingly. If I actually lived in LA after graduation, the novelty of this city
would wear off because I see it so often. This is why I loved living in south
Orange County for 19 years; because the few trips I did take to LA felt so
special because it was so different than where I lived.

I absolutely feel the same way! Before I transferred here, I also applied to Stanford but honestly preferred going to USC because I knew I would have a great experience. USC's constant events are outmatched only by LA's booming social life, and this city really captures urban life at its best (and sometimes worst).
ReplyDeleteWow I also came here for the city of LA too! And the football team....which has been a huge let down :(
ReplyDeleteThat was part of my reason for coming to LA as well! I thought of LA as such an exciting place and a place of adventure. I kind of filtered my choices around la itself. I am enjoying getting to know this great city.
ReplyDeleteI totally get where you're coming from! One of the reasons I chose LMU and then USC was because they were both in LA and I personally love the area. I think it's kinda a college location though like I don't know if I'd want to raise a family here.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading what you had to say about why you chose USC! I agree too that its nice to be on campus that is close to so much excitement and the city life. I love going off campus to try new trendy restaurants and attend concerts at the Staples Center.
ReplyDeleteIt was also one of my reasons why I chose USC! I used to go to college in suburb area near Boston and I missed city life so much... I also chose LA for having a great weather instead of suffering from cold for two more years haha
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post! Part of the reason I came as well was for the city of LA! On another note, that game was just sad.
ReplyDeleteUSC being located in LA was definitely a huge factor for me. I live in Southern California so I wanted to be nearby and the fact that LA has so many opportunities and is so lively was allows me to branch out and explore the city life.
